Resources for Writing
Here are some of my favorite resources for writing and publishing.
If you love books, want a career in traditional publishing, or have written a book you would like to publish, check out Ooligan Press and the MA in Publishing program at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon.
This unique program gives students hands-on experience in book design, editing, marketing, sales and distribution while they work on real manuscripts published by PSU's in-house press. It also gives authors a creative and cost-effective way to publish their books.
A Writer's Coach: An Editor's Guide to Words That Work by Jack Hart
This book was written by the managing editor and writing coach at The Oregonian, the major daily newspaper in the state. Hart is a wonderful teacher, editor and writer, with years of experience helping to train Pulitzer Prize winning journalists. He has synthesized his knowledge in this book, which is one of the best I have seen for training nonfiction writers how to write.
Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody Can Write by Elizabeth Lyon
If you want to write a nonfiction book, start here. By following Lyon's process for writing a book proposal, you will hone, test and justify your book idea, define your purpose and audience, flesh out your ideas by creating chapter summaries, and write three complete chapters. At the end of the process, you will not only have an outstanding book proposal to send to agents and publishers, you will also be well on your way to finishing your book! (Whether you end up going the traditional publishing route or publish your book yourself.)
Writing the Mind Alive: The Proprioceptive Method for Finding Your Authentic Voice by Linda Trichter Metcalf and Tobin Simon
This book presents a wonderful, meditative, non-threatening writing technique with tremendous benefits. Whether you seek to overcome writer's block, work through a deep-seated fear of putting your thoughts down on paper, or gain greater understanding of yourself and your inner processes, this is the place to start.
Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions by James Pennebaker
Dr. Pennebaker is Chair of the Psychology Department at the University of Texas in Austin. In this fascinating book written for the lay reader, Pennebaker relates numerous research studies he and his students have conducted, all of which document the power of writing to heal.
A book index makes the difference between a good and a very good book. If you have written a nonfiction book and are looking for a professional indexer, contact Clive at Clive Pyne Book Indexing Services. He specializes in scholarly and trade non-fiction and reference books that deal with all kinds of subjects. He will provide you with on-time service that meets your specifications, and his rates are competitive.
Book Design
If you have finished writing your book manuscript and are looking for an excellent book designer who can not only design your book cover and interior, but also handle the entire printing process, contact Jennifer Omner. For more information, go to her website: All Publications
Virtual Assistance
Virtual Assistants are self-employed professionals who provide business support services from their own home office. Thanks to modern technology, clients are just as likely to find their ideal Virtual Assistant in another city, state, or even country as in their own neighborhood. To work with one of the best, contact Miki Petrusic (who just happens to live in Australia).
